Houston-born singer-songwriter, actor, and record producer Lyle Lovett have been belting out countless hits since launching his music career in 1980. His love for music began in his youth. He started writing songs while attending a university in Texas during the ‘70s. He spent the latter part of the decade and the early ‘80s performing solo acoustic sets in bars outside the campus. While traveling with some acquaintances, Lovett was advised to perform with a backing band. True enough, Lovett went to the studio with a band in 1984. The resulting demo tape scored him a record deal.
In 1986, Lovett dropped his self-titled debut album via Curb Records. The album became an immediate hit after peaking at number 14 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. The album, which spawned Lovett’s massive hit, “Cowboy Man,” received wide acclaim from fans and critics, with Rolling Stone including the record in their 100 Best Albums of the 1980s. For the remainder of the ‘80s, Lovett dropped two more studio gems, Pontiac and his groundbreaking jazz-infused record Lyle Lovett And His Large Band. Both albums made a breakthrough into the Billboard 200 and entered the Country Chart’s top 20. Moreover, both albums eventually sold over 500,000 copies each, earning gold certifications in the U.S.
Over the next decade, Lovett dropped four highly-acclaimed efforts – all gold certified. His 1996 album, Road to Ensenada, peaked at number 4 on the Country chart and 24 on the Billboard 200. The album is one of Lovett’s most celebrated works, especially after winning the Best Country Album at the 1997 Grammy Awards. Road to Ensenada, which spawned the hit single, “That's Right (You’re from Texas),” also featured performances from renowned musicians, such as Jackson Browne, Paul Franklin, and Shawn Colvin.
In 2007, Lovett released his highest-charting effort, It’s Not Big It’s Large. The album notably peaked at number 2 on the country chart and number 18 on the Billboard 200. The groundbreaking effort was recorded live in the studio and contained remarkable blues and jazz arrangements. The album features several impressive tracks, including a cover of the traditional prison work song “Ain’t No More Cane.”
Lyle Lovett’s amazing career spans four decades, but he has proven his longevity with several chart-performing studio releases. His most recent work, Releases Me, debuted at number 9 on the Country Chart, while its lead single, “Isn’t That So,” made waves on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. This spring, he’s releasing his first studio effort in a decade titled 12th of June.
