Billy Idol’s early days in the music scene were spent playing guitar for the punk rock band Chelsea. The English singer-songwriter eventually left the band and founded the band Generation X, which found local success. After releasing three albums with Generation X, Idol disbanded the group in 1981 and moved to New York City to pursue a solo career. New York City was the birthplace of punk music and spawned legendary artists such as the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, and many more. There, Idol released his self-titled debut studio album with commercial success. The record was preceded by hit singles, “Dancing With Myself” and “White Wedding.”

In 1983, Idol released his follow-up album, Rebel Yell, featuring the eponymous title track and “Eyes Without a Face.” The album debuted at number 6 on the U.S. charts and was certified double platinum after selling more than two million copies. Three years later, Rebel Yell’s follow-up album, Whiplash Smile, was dropped, and the record also became a commercial success in the U.S., U.K., and eight other countries. Whiplash Smile featured three hit singles, “To Be a Lover,” “Don’t Need a Gun,” and “Sweet Sixteen.” After the phenomenal success of his first three albums, Idol continued his winning streak and released five more full studio albums and an EP, Roadside, in 2021.

Roadside was Idol’s first release in seven years after the launch of his eighth studio album, Kings & Queens of the Underground. The EP featured Idol’s longtime collaborator and guitarist Steve Stevens. Together, they worked on four monumental tracks and released “Bitter Taste,” as the lead single.
